Georgia - Mccheta

Mccheta - Georgia

Mccheta is located next to Tbilisi . It takes about 30 minutes to go there form Didube bus station by marshrutka(1 lari).

We took a share taxi with two Thais in Mccheta and went to Jvari Monastry.  According to legend, in the early 4th century Saint Nino erected a large wooden cross on the site of a pagan temple. The cross was reportedly able to work miracles and therefore drew pilgrims from all over the Caucasus. A small church was erected over the remnants of the wooden cross in c.545. The present church was built between 590-605. -

The church was built on a hill. There is panoramic view on the Mccheta and surroundings from the hill. There was a view on a river flowing into the other. Water colours were different. One river was muddy the other was green. The water didn't mix, see the picture.

We went back to Mccheta centre by taxi and visited huge Cathedral Sweti Cchowel. Cathedral is the most important church in Georgia and Mchceta is called 'Holy City'.
